Myanmar’s deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to seven years in prison on five corruption charges on Friday, the Reuters agency said. The verdict thus ended a carousel of trials against the former leader, who was labeled a “farce” by the international community.

In a closed-door trial, 77-year-old Suu Kyi, who was detained during a February 2021 coup, was found guilty of offenses related to renting and operating a helicopter while the country’s de facto leader.

The jail term comes on top of Suu Kyi’s 26-year sentence already for crimes ranging from incitement to violence, violation of covid restrictions and illegal possession of radio equipment, to violation of a state secrets law, multiple charges of corruption and attempting to defraud election officials. to influence. The popular Oxford-educated Suu Kyi, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for her decades-long campaign for democracy in Myanmar, has spent much of her political life in detention under military governments. He ruled Myanmar, the official name for the former Burma, for five years from 2015, after a decade of timid democracy that came after 49 years of military rule.

However, the military retook control of the country early last year to prevent Suu Kyi’s government from starting a second term in office.
