The member states of the EU approved Croatia’s accession to the Schengen area on 8 December. The country that has been part of the EU since 2013 thus becomes the twenty-seventh member of the zone where you can move freely without border controls.
What is the Schengen Area?
It is the area of the European countries that have abolished border controls at common borders, also known as internal borders.
The space was created in 1985 by the Schengen Agreement and began functioning in 1995 to abolish common borders between member states and establish common controls abroad in those countries. In practice, the Schengen area functions as one country in migration terms, with a common visa policy.
These are the 27 countries that form the Schengen area as of 1 January: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Slovenia, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta , Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland.
