New Year’s Eve drama in Lower Austria – 18-year-old death: bullet bomb ignited too early

The 18-year-old was with some local youths on a field in St. Johann am Steinfelde, a cadastral municipality of Ternitz (Neunkirchen district), and lit fireworks there. They allegedly shot down several bullet bombs.

The 18-year-old would have bent over fireworks
According to the police, about 50 centimeters long plastic pipes have been placed. The killed 18-year-old would have been in the immediate vicinity of the fireworks during the explosion and, according to initial, unconfirmed information, he would have bent over the fireworks. The exact course of the accident was initially unclear. Furthermore, it was not clear to which category of fireworks the ball bombs used belonged. The crime scene was cordoned off and the criminal investigation department of Lower Austria took over the investigation.

Other youths injured
The accident led to a major rescue effort. An 18-year-old was seriously injured and flown by helicopter to a hospital in Graz. A 17- and a 19-year-old were injured. These two persons were transported by ambulance to the State Hospital Wiener Neustadt. A local resident reported a large “contingent of people”: “Everything was full of emergency vehicles.”

More pyro accidents in Lower Austria
In addition to the incident in the Neunkirchen district, there were two other pyro-accidents with serious consequences in Lower Austria on New Year’s Eve. In Lichtenau in the Waldviertel (Krems district), a 16-year-old was seriously injured when a firecracker exploded. The teen was flown to a hospital. According to police reports as of Sunday morning, his life is in danger.

In Kollmitzberg, a cadastral district of Ardagger in the Amstetten district, a 19-year-old had several fingers ripped off by a firecracker. In addition, some other people suffered blast trauma from this explosion.

Several fires on New Year’s Eve
According to the police, several fires were also registered on New Year’s Eve. In the state, a grenade and a carport were on fire.

Overall, it was one of the most demanding New Year’s Eve for the helpers in Lower Austria in years: Notruf NÖ recorded 346 rescues, according to a broadcast. That was an increase of more than 30 percent compared to previous years. In the hours from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. alone, 155 rescue operations were counted. In addition to acute illnesses, the paramedics and emergency doctors had to be called 16 times for injuries from fireworks and fires, 12 times for alcohol abuse, 10 times for falls and five times for scuffles.

Incidents also in other federal states
There were also incidents on New Year’s Eve in Vienna, where young people in Floridsdorf threw fireworks at the police and two people were injured by the explosion of fireworks. In Upper Austria, a person was seriously injured in the leg by the explosion of a firecracker and in Salzburg a mass brawl ensued in which a security guard fired into the air.
