Rioters set fire to 690 cars in France on New Year’s Eve. That is 21 percent fewer burnt-out cars than at the turn of the year, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin told BFMTV on Sunday. The police consistently cracked down on troublemakers. There were 490 arrests nationwide.
More than 90,000 police officers were on duty in France and, in general, the turn of the year passed peacefully and without major incidents. Some two million revelers took to the streets in the center of Paris alone.
60 arrests in Strasbourg
In Strasbourg, where there have been regular problems in recent years, the police also spoke of an extremely quiet night, reports BFMTV. Still, about 60 vehicles were set on fire and about 60 people, mostly youths, were arrested.
A 26-year-old man was injured in a shooting in Marseille, southern France, where people regularly die in the drug environment. Three men aged 20 and 22 have been arrested on suspicion and a large sum of money has been seized from them.
