A firefight between security forces and the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) has claimed ten lives in Pakistan. Particularly tragic: among them are two children.
The other dead are said to be members of the militant Islamists. Authorities say security forces stormed a suspected TTP stronghold in the northern region of Waziristan, on the border with Afghanistan, on Wednesday night.
In the line of fire
It was said that a shootout ensued with the two children in the line of fire. Pakistan has been campaigning for some time against the Pakistani Taliban, who in turn are increasingly claiming responsibility for the attacks. According to official figures, 84 people were killed in an attack in the city of Peshawar at the end of January.
After investigation, the secret service announced that it identified the Pakistani Taliban as masterminds. The TTP, on the other hand, had distanced itself from the attack. The Pakistani Taliban are independent of the Islamist Taliban government in neighboring Afghanistan.
