Iran will elect a new president on Friday. About 61 million voters are being called to choose a successor to Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash.
Unlike many countries in the world, the Iranian president is not the head of state. The real power lies with religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Guardian Council, an Islamic monitoring body, approved only six candidates for the election. Two applicants have already withdrawn their candidacy.
Hardliner Said Djalili, a former nuclear negotiator, as well as incumbent parliament speaker Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf and challenger Massud Peseshkian from the reformist camp have the best chances. If none of the candidates wins an absolute majority, a second election will take place on July 5.
Polling stations are open from 08:00 to 18:00 local time (06:30 to 16:30 CEST) with the possibility of extension. The first results are expected on Saturday.
