Two ice climbers from Germany were on New Year’s Day on the Enzingerboden in the Stubach Valley (Pinzgau) in the “Gläserne Madonna” icefall when boulders came loose while abseiling …
When the two rappelled off the drilled rappelling poles around 4:30 p.m., the rope got stuck. When attempting to untie the rope, four 50 centimeter boulders fell down and hit the 24-year-old in the head and shoulder area. The climber suffered a head injury and was in a disoriented state. His 38-year-old colleague passively rappelled the injured man to the base of the wall and immediately called 911.
The two winter sports enthusiasts were able to walk independently to the middle station of the Weißsee Bergbahnen, where they were then taken down to the valley by the mountain rescue service Enzingerboden and employees of the Bergbahnen. The 24-year-old was injured to an unknown extent in the accident and was taken to the hospital in Zell am See by the Red Cross.
It is an icefall with a difficulty of WI 4 – 5. The ice climbers were equipped with proper ice climbing equipment, 60 meter half ropes and avalanche emergency equipment.
