The sausage stall is valued as an institution in Vienna and will in the future also be included on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. This goal is pursued by an initiative of a group of operators.
Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) and Chamber of Commerce Chairman Walter Ruck signed a statement of support on Wednesday. The event took place, appropriately, in a sausage stall near the opera.
“Inextricably linked to the heart of the city”
The restaurateurs now want to achieve what the Viennese coffee house culture, the Viennese Heurigen culture or the Viennese waltz have already achieved: obtain the status of intangible cultural heritage. “The Viennese sausage stands are inextricably linked to the heart of our city and are more than just places selling delicious food,” said Mayor Ludwig.
“The sausage stalls are part of the city’s identity and history. They are also a social hub and strengthen community and solidarity in Vienna,” he emphasizes.
The classic sausage rack, on the other hand, is a relatively recent achievement. The city only allowed fixed locations in 1969. The formal application for inclusion of the “Viennese sausage stall culture” in the register of intangible cultural heritage in Austria will be submitted in the coming days.
