Looking ahead to the new year – Austrians are pessimistic in comparison

Date:

People all over the world are becoming less and less confident. According to a survey, almost every second person in Austria is pessimistic about the New Year. That is more than in India and Nigeria, for example. In contrast, only 18 percent are optimists.

Concerns about the economy are above average in Austria. Nearly three-quarters of the population expect the economic situation to deteriorate in the new year, compared to a global average of only 48 percent. Just a year ago, these concerns were significantly lower both globally and in this country.

The Austrian population sees another danger in the use of nuclear weapons. The majority (57 percent) assumes a medium risk, slightly less than every fourth person (23 percent) even sees a high risk. 13 percent currently see no nuclear threat.

Happiness almost average
According to the Gallup survey, the happiness of Austrians is slightly below the global average. Globally, the small majority of people (54 percent) describe themselves as very happy or happy. On the other hand, slightly more than every tenth (13 percent) feel (very) unhappy. These are mainly respondents in Armenia, Turkey, Moldova, Kenya, Hong Kong and Argentina.

Pessimists were on the rise worldwide
In general, respondents in the countries of the South and East of the world have the most confidence in the future, especially in Nigeria, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, the Philippines and India. Europe is particularly notable for its predominantly pessimistic attitude. Expectations for the next twelve months are particularly negative in Poland, the Czech Republic, Serbia, France and Italy. Overall, about a third (34 percent) of people assume the new year will be worse than the last. That’s a little over a year ago.

For the October to December survey, a total of 35,664 people aged 15 and older in 34 countries around the world were interviewed (approximately 1,000 people per country). The results are representative of the total population of each country.
