The migratory movements pose enormous challenges for the police and the armed forces on the Burgenland border. It won’t get better anytime soon.
This past year had it all! The influx of migrants was enormous. As early as January 2022, the number of seizures has skyrocketed. Dramatic scenes played out again and again on the border with Hungary. Neither day nor night was there a respite for hundreds of soldiers on welfare and police on patrol.
tense situation
The tense situation worsened over the months. The border guards came under increasing pressure, in the summer they were pushed to their limits by the developments along the Balkan route and their bitter consequences. The figures confirm this: while 19,938 refugees were reported throughout Burgenland in 2021, there were exactly 81,206,1048 in the last calendar week last year.
Leader Neusiedl am See
As expected, the Neusiedl am See district is the number one migration hotspot. In the past twelve months, 43,630 refugees have arrived there. The situation in the district of Oberpullendorf was also difficult: a total of 30,231 immigrants were reported, mainly distributed among the particularly hard-hit border communities such as Deutschkreutz and Nikitsch – a statistic that reflects much suffering and is of great concern to the population.
In contrast, migration movements in the other parts of the country were manageable. There are 2930 seizures recorded in the Oberwart district, 2342 in Güssing, 1078 in the Eisenstadt area, 899 in Mattersburg and 96 in Jennersdorf.
Escape the police
Reportedly, a smuggler who drove across the border from the police at around 0:45 am on New Year’s Eve in Rattersdorf and fled from the police has recently caused a stir. After 60 kilometers, the criminal lost control in dense fog and drove his van into a ditch at a roundabout on the B 59 between Müllendorf and Großhöflein. There were eight migrants in the vehicle.
“The Syrians, some of whom were seriously injured, crawled out of the couch and cargo area, some writhing in pain,” said a witness. All eight victims of the accident were taken to the hospital in Eisenstadt. The steering wheel is still fleeting. The police arrested 365 people smugglers in 2022.
Escaping and politics
More than 90 percent of those arrested are men, most between the ages of 18 and 25. They submitted the vast majority of the 101,755 asylum applications in Austria. Afghans, Syrians, Indians, Tunisians and Pakistanis top the list. The call to stop recording is getting louder. Above all, ÖVP state chairman and MEP Christian Sagartz insists on clear guidelines. He argues for a maximum of 10,000 asylum applications per year.
