A Styrian (24) was injured on Tuesday evening at a waste separation company in St. Margarethen an der Raab. Mobile phone batteries that had apparently been improperly disposed of had started two fires. Six fire departments were deployed to extinguish the fire.
Around 7:30 PM, two employees of the company were separating waste when suddenly a shredder started to burn that had been previously loaded with waste by an employee (24). The small fire was extinguished by the 24-year-old and a colleague and work continued.
The fire brigade had to come to the second fire
A short time later, around 8 p.m., the fire broke out again in an installation where the waste is delivered after shredding. The employees then called the fire department. A total of six fire brigades were eventually able to get the fire under control.
An investigation into the cause of the fire revealed that mobile phone batteries found in the rubbish were likely the cause of the fire. The Red Cross took the 24-year-old employee from Southeast Styria to the regional hospital of Feldbach with suspected smoke poisoning. The extent of the damage is still unknown.
Batteries: Fire hazard in waste
There are countless fires in recycling plants every year. This is often due to lithium-ion batteries that have been improperly disposed of. Most consumers are probably not aware of the danger.
