Following the floods in Greece, two rescued victims have been identified as Austrians who have been missing for more than a week. “The results of the DNA comparisons now available have confirmed that these are the two people who have been missing since the heavy flooding,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Saturday evening.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the families and relatives in these difficult times,” it was emphasized. “The team at the Austrian Embassy in Athens will continue to support the family members.” The Ministry of Foreign Affairs asked for their understanding that no further information would be released.
Grazers were missing after the storm surge
The violent storm ‘Daniel’ in central Greece caused flooding and serious damage a week ago. The Graz couple Michaela and Philipp have also been missing since then. After a female body was discovered on the beach at the beginning of this week and a male body shortly afterwards, there is now sad certainty: DNA traces from the woman’s body showed that it was actually the missing persons from Graz.
According to Greek police, both bodies were found on the beach of Theotokos near the settlement of Lyri on Mount Pelion. The deceased couple is said to have been swept away in their bungalow by the heavy floods after the storm “Daniel”.
Wedding party with 40 guests
The couple from Graz married in August with 40 guests in the Pelion region, where the bride’s family has been vacationing for decades. The newlyweds remained in the region. Despite the storm, the bridal couple did not want to flee, but stayed in the bungalow. However, according to local eyewitnesses, it was torn away and washed into the sea.
