An 18-year-old dead, two other young men in mortal danger: the record of fireworks accidents is again tragic and bloody this year after the turn of the year. Every year terrible accidents overshadow New Year’s Eve, and also the days of the New Year. The reasons lie in incorrect use, but also in the purchase of illegal fireworks in and from abroad. The consequences can be devastating – and in the worst case, fatal.
With all the gory headlines, the fireworks industry feels in a bad light. “The permanent misuse of illegal products with deaths and injuries is constantly generating negative headlines in our industry, which offers legal, safe and colorful fireworks during the New Year’s Eve period,” complains Hans Matthias Liebenwein, president of the Austrian Pyrotechnic Association.
The too lax handling of the sometimes life-threatening fireworks is denounced. You constantly fight against dealers “who sell these fireworks to people without permission and specialist knowledge and are therefore life-threatening for the user”. Moreover, buying fireworks – also prohibited – is easy via the internet. According to the association, sending by parcel service is already prohibited.
Many items explode too quickly
Fireworks from abroad usually do not meet the Austrian safety standard and are not tested. Many articles would explode too early, “others have too much powder”.
As reported, an 18-year-old in Lower Austria died after a bullet bomb exploded – it is believed to have exploded too early. She belonged to category F4, should the police investigate. The same goes for the fireworks whose explosion fatally injured a 16-year-old. In this case, it is also clear that the boy had bought the fireworks illegally in the Czech Republic.
Fireworks of categories F1 and F2 are allowed in Austria – only one age limit applies here. Category F3 and F4 pyrotechnics is only reserved for qualified specialists who are in possession of a pyrotechnics pass. You also need a permit for the latter.
“Dangerous Nonsense and Terrifying Stupidity”
In combination with a party atmosphere and alcohol, an explosive and life-threatening mixture is created when fireworks are ignited: “If it is also reported that someone puts a firecracker in the mouth or shoots it from behind, you cannot blame our industry. the. This is dangerous nonsense and terrifying stupidity, combined with boasting and alcohol,” said Liebenwein.
The union approved the action weeks before the turn of the year, whereby a large number of illegal fireworks could be seized.
