The history of the city park is peppered with some dramas. Loyal “Krone” readers know that.
Unlike many other green oases in Vienna, the Stadtpark is not closed at night. This pleased many Viennese in times of pandemic and hiccups with the federal gardens. Interestingly enough, it was also chosen as their headquarters by the opponents of the measures for that reason. In November 2021, the protest camp was finally evacuated by the police.
excesses and deaths
Incidentally, the city park is not an unknown crime scene for the police. Dramatic incidents have occurred here repeatedly in recent years (see excerpts below). Attacks, drug and alcohol abuses were often the order of the day and there were also deaths.
City park in a sleep
Apparently there is no reason for city politics to become active here. Urban planning, the city park lives like a slumber existence. It was not until 2021 that the idea of turning the city park into a large terrace arose – which met with little enthusiasm, especially in the city center. Last December, a motion was even tabled in the district parliament. The city requires that downtown parks and green areas remain free from commercial use and major events.
The motion was passed unanimously. The question remains: is the city park in its current form a safe haven?
