Street crime – Proud Soko balance: 25,000 arrests in Vienna!

Date:

Since the establishment of the special unit against street crime, 570 kilos of narcotics worth millions have been seized. The detectives have been working tirelessly day and night for 20 years to make the streets of Vienna even safer. The record of around 25,000 arrests is impressive!

It is a great contribution that the Task Force against Street Crime (EGS) has been making for almost exactly 20 years now. The core task of the special unit: combating burglary and drug crime.

Thanks to intensive searches, 6.2 million euros worth of drugs have already been seized. This impressive list of achievements peaked in the first half of this year. First reconnaissance coup: Following a tip from colleagues from the Lower Austrian Criminal Investigation Department, the Viennese police officers were able to break up a gang whose members had posed as employees of a mobile phone operator and thus gained access to the apartments of their victims. The trio reportedly committed trick theft with damage of several 100,000 euros.

Hunting for criminals with trackers and drones
The task force even used tracking devices and drones until the arrest. At the beginning of July, the EGS members then struck in the Eichenstraße area, where a dealer was arrested. He had hidden almost a kilo of cocaine. On July 5, two men were seen stealing a motorcycle from an underground parking garage in the Floridsdorf district. The handcuffs clicked after detection and a very discreet pursuit via the A4 at the border crossing Nickelsdorf in Burgenland. In this case, the highly motivated officials assume a serial offender.

The pinnacle of the unit’s string of successes, with 25,000 arrests and detentions since its inception: a few days ago, a campaign launched at the end of July was efficiently rounded off with the arrest of a total of nine Serbian drug dealers. Ten house searches were also carried out.
