He was in the right place at the right time and then reacted in the right way. British-born Ed Holloway saved the life of three-year-old Sophie on Tuesday afternoon. The child had drowned in a swimming pool.
He actually wanted to swim in peace for an hour to train for a charity campaign in memory of his recently deceased mother. But then Ed Holloway (44) suddenly became a lifesaver. The born Brit, who lives with his wife in Bad Aussee (Styria) and runs a food truck, was in the indoor swimming pool in Spital am Pyhrn on Tuesday afternoon.
Child discovered on the pelvic floor
“After swimming for about 20 minutes, I saw a child at the bottom of the pool. It is kneeling and its hands are also on the floor. It was immediately clear to me that something was not right. I was afraid that the child had already was dead,” he said in an interview with “Krone”. Holloway didn’t think twice, dove down and grabbed the tiny body, pulling it to the surface and then to the edge of the pool.
Quickly recovered
“A woman helped me get the baby out of the pool,” says Holloway. And because the Brit is actually a doctor (he only worked as a doctor for a year after his studies), he also knew what to do. “I did everything I could to make sure the girl didn’t vomit and cause problems. Then I turned them aside,” says the Briton. And fate was kind to little Sophie. “She coughed and came back conscious. I spoke to her again a few minutes later,” says the rescuer, who is happy that the girl, who lives in Styria, is out of danger.
family thankful
The family of the three-year-old, who is being observed in the hospital in Wels, is also very happy. She went to the indoor swimming pool with her grandparents. “Grandma called me that same evening to say thank you and I have already called my father, who is of course also very grateful and relieved,” says Holloway.
Ed Holloway will return to swimming no later than March 8. In memory of his late mother, Marilyn, he swims five miles to raise money for a charity that supports children with autism.
