Storming US Capitol – Hundreds sentenced since attack two years ago

Date:

Since the violent storming of the US Capitol exactly two years ago, law enforcement has arrested and charged hundreds of people in the attack. In total, more than 950 people have since been arrested in connection with the attack. Many of them have been charged with various crimes, according to the US Department of Justice.

Shortly before the second anniversary of the attack, the US Department of Justice announced that more than 350 cases had been reviewed at the federal level. More than 190 people were sentenced to prison terms. Attorney General Merrick Garland spoke of one of the largest and most complex investigations in U.S. history, emphasizing, “Our work is far from done.”

At a ceremony at the White House marking the anniversary of the attack on the Capitol, US President Joe Biden wants to honor several police officers for their service on that day. Biden said Thursday (local time) on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting in front of reporters in view of the unprecedented outbreak of violence at the time: “Pray to God that this never happens again.”

Five people were killed in the riots
On January 6, 2021, supporters of then-President Donald Trump violently stormed the seat of parliament in Washington. Congress met there to formally affirm Democrat Biden’s victory in the presidential election. Earlier, Trump had told his supporters in a speech that he had been robbed of a victory by massive electoral fraud. Five people were killed in the riots.

Trump impeached in final report
A committee of inquiry in the House of Representatives had worked out the attack in recent months. Shortly before Christmas, the commission presented its final report, in which it attributed much of the responsibility for the attack to Trump. The panel also recommended criminal charges against Trump on several counts. Whether the Justice Department will actually take criminal action against the ex-president remains to be seen, as the recommendation is not legally binding.
