Army stunned after Friday morning’s drama in which a 20-year-old security guard shot around the airfield barracks in Lower Austria’s Wiener Neustadt and was shot dead by an officer moments later. Questions are asked about the incident and the injured officer has been arrested at the hospital.
The young guard was conscripted and would have had a fight with his superior on Thursday evening. At 6:55 a.m. on Friday, the situation completely escalated.
Officer suffered cuts
The 20-year-old threatened his comrades during the changing of the guard, assaulted his superior, the Officer of the Day, a 54-year-old non-commissioned officer, and opened fire with a 77 assault rifle. Shortly afterwards, the conscript was shot dead by the officer. The supervisor suffered a cut during the argument.
The cut wound had to be treated on an outpatient basis in the hospital, after which the 54-year-old was arrested. The Ministry of Defense said that those involved were taken care of by the Army’s Psychiatric Service.
Was it self defense?
“We are at the beginning of the investigation,” says police spokesman Johann Baumschlager. In addition to securing evidence, further interviews are planned to reconstruct the course of the crime. The question in the room is whether there is self-defense.
