The German government plans to transfer the promised “Marder” armored cars to Ukraine in the first three months of the new year. A government spokesman in Berlin said on Friday that it concerns about 40 of the weapon systems with which a battalion can be equipped.
However, Berlin still refuses to comply with Ukrainian demands for more tank deliveries, such as the Leopard 2 main battle tank. The government spokesman said he could not promise anything at this time. These requirements are not new either.
The “Marder” deliveries are explained, among other things, with the new war situation in the country attacked by Russia: there are currently massive air strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure, the spokesman said. In addition, the previous ring exchange deliveries, involving several European countries, are slowly coming to an end. That is why the new step is now being taken to supply Western armored cars plus ammunition.
According to experts, the planned training for Ukrainian soldiers in Germany will last about eight weeks. The US side will also train Ukrainians on their Bradley infantry fighting vehicle. It is not yet known whether this will happen in the US or in Germany.
Berlin also gives Kiev anti-aircraft missiles of the Patriot type. The delivery of the weapon systems has been coordinated with the US; talks are said to have started before Christmas. France also reportedly took part in the negotiations and is now also supplying tanks to Ukraine. The US and Germany also want to train the Ukrainians with the Patriots.
The Americans have already provided Kiev with several heavy weapon systems, including the HIMARS multiple rocket launchers, which sometimes inflict heavy casualties on Russian forces.
