Russian tennis player Daniel Medvedev easily surpassed her compatriot Karen Khachanov (6-3 and 6-3) and reached the semifinals of the Adelaide tournament, where she will face Novak Djokovic after the victory of the Serbian tennis player against the Canadian Denis Shapovalov (6-3 and 6-4).
Medvedev, number seven in the world, is looking to hit the table before the Australian Open and after failing at the Masters Tournament (he lost his three matches against Andrey Rublev, Stéfanos Tsitsipas and Djokovic) and showed green shoots in the exhibition of Saudi Arabia which was disputed in the middle of the month of December.
He is now one step away from the Adelaide final and he did so after eliminating Khachanov in just over an hour and a quarter and after signing two near-perfect sets. In the first, he broke open in game seven when he earned his first service break, while in the second he rallied from 1-3 down to win five straight games and take the match.
Later, Djokovic closed the day with a closer victory over Shapovalov, who sold his defeat more expensively. The world number five needed almost two hours to stay in the competition after two sets in which he was superior.
In the first, Shapovalov held out until the eighth game, when he broke serve to trail 5-3. Then, Djokovic did not spare his serve and put a set ahead of his rival.
In the second, Djokovic made the decisive move with 4-4 on the scoreboard. He broke the Canadian tennis player’s serve for the third time and in the final 6-4, he won the match. Medvedev is his last obstacle before the final.
On the other side of the table, the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka and the American Sebastian Korda continue the competition, eliminating the Australian Alexei Popyrin and the Italian Jannik Sinner, respectively. Both will meet tomorrow for a place in the final to be played on Sunday.
