20 meter fall – Tyrol: two seriously injured in paragliding accidents

Date:

Two serious accidents involving paragliders took place in the Tyrolean Zillertal on Monday afternoon. A 61-year-old crashed into a wooden fence in Fügenberg during an emergency landing, and another pilot (31) crashed his glider in Finkenberg shortly afterwards. Despite his serious injuries, the man single-handedly fought his way down the valley.

The first accident happened around 1 p.m. In the municipality of Fügenberg, a 61-year-old paraglider had to make an emergency landing for unclear reasons. He crashed into the Kunzeraste at about 1230 meters above sea level against a wooden fence. The man sustained serious injuries. After first aid, he had to be flown by emergency helicopter to the state hospital in Innsbruck.

The flight also ended Monday at the university hospital for a 31-year-old paraglider. Shortly before 1.30 pm he found himself in an emergency situation from gusty winds when the paraglider tipped forward at the Penken Panorama Restaurant. The 31-year-old threw the rescue parachute, but without success: the pilot fell about 20 meters and fell into a depression.

The victim was able to call the emergency number himself and take the gondola to the valley, where he went to the Sports Clinic Mayrhofen. Doctors there determined that the man had suffered serious injuries to his spine and upper body. He was then taken to the Innsbruck clinic.
