A 50-year-old allegedly pretended to be an employee of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce or an official of a ministry and deceived business people. As a victim, he mainly focused on taxi companies.
According to police, he claimed to approve EU funding and cashed it in. The man is in custody, but refuses to testify. The police are now looking for more victims of fraud, according to a broadcast on Sunday.
Feigned subsidies
“He allegedly pretended to have authority to approve EU funding for small and medium-sized businesses and individuals,” said police spokesman Markus Dittrich. For this he had requested several payments from the top three-digit to the bottom four-digit euro amount, which was necessary for processing.
A dozen victims of fraud
“The victims identified so far have received written reports from non-existent employees of the Chamber of Commerce,” says Dittrich. The victims were given the impression that the approval process would be completed positively. There are currently about ten known victims of fraud. The headquarters of the Vienna State Police is looking for other victims.
