A 52-year-old homeowner had a breakdown on Saturday evening in Guttaring in Carinthia. Due to a power failure, he discovered a fire in time.
The 52-year-old was carrying out renovation work on the top floor of his home in Guttaring. At around 6:45 p.m., he burned the paper-produced waste wood in the auxiliary stove of his kitchen on the ground floor. He left the stove door ajar to let air in. The man then went upstairs again and continued working,” said the police. “But after 15 minutes, the power suddenly went out.”
Due to this happy coincidence, the 52-year-old discovered a strong smoke and fire development and thus the fire in the kitchen in time before it could spread to the entire house.
Trying to extinguish the fire with a garden hose
“The homeowner asked his neighbor to call the fire department and tried to put out the fire himself with a garden hose,” police said. “The fire only got out of hand when the fire brigade arrived and could then be completely extinguished by them.” The cause of the fire was heat build-up in the chimney. This then set fire to the wooden box built around the fireplace.
The volunteer fire brigades in Hüttenberg, Knappenberg and Guttaring were deployed with 50 emergency services. No people were injured in the fire.
