The Graz-Karlau prison, the largest prison in Styria, is being renovated at a cost of 35 million euros. The construction must be finished in 2025 – and then be able to house fewer criminals. The “Krone” got its first glimpse.
The renovation plans for the Karlau prison in Graz, where many serious criminals are serving their sentences, have been in the making for many years. However, nothing happened for a long time. “Urgent renovation has come to a standstill,” reported the “Steirerkrone” around 2018. At the time, the Ministries of Justice and Finance were lurking each other, the sticking point was of course the financing issue. The renovation of the building, whose origins date back to 1584, should have cost 22 million euros at the time. And then came the outbreak in October 2020 and another attempt just three months later.
