Brazil’s Supreme Court on Monday ordered the country’s military to evacuate the camp where hundreds of followers of former President Jair Bolsonaro took refuge, a day after the attack on the headquarters of Congress and the Supreme Court, and the presidential palace. These are settlements built for military barracks by supporters of Bolsonaro who were dissatisfied with his defeat by Lula.
After the invasion of the main buildings of the Brazilian state, many of Bolosonaro’s faithful left on foot yesterday to the camp they maintain in front of the army headquarters. This morning, however, the police of the Federal District of Brasilia dismantled the camp that Bolsonaro militants had set up after the October elections and from which the attacks on the headquarters of the three powers were launched on Sunday.
Brasilia military police officers, reinforced by army troops, blocked access to the camp early today to prevent the arrival of more protesters and ordered the peaceful eviction of those who remained in the place.
For his part, Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has assured that the “fascist vandals” will be “found” and “punished”, as will their financiers. The progressive president described the serious altercations in the Brazilian capital by far-right radicals, who have been “boosted” by the ex-governor, as “barbarism”, according to Lula.
