Supporters rioted – Ex-President Bolsonaro released from hospital

Date:

Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro has been released from hospital after a short stay. Bolsonaro himself announced this on Twitter. According to media reports, he was treated at a hospital in the city of Orlando, Florida shortly after his supporters rioted in his home country (see video above).

Bolsonaro flew his family to the United States two days before the end of his term on New Year’s Day, where he has since resided in Florida. According to the Brazilian newspaper “O Globo”, he suffered from severe abdominal pain. It is not the first time that right-wing politicians have come to the clinic, not even in politically critical situations.

During an election campaign in September 2018, a mentally disturbed man stabbed Bolsonaro and inflicted severe abdominal injuries on him. The former soldier then continued the election campaign from the hospital. The following month he was elected president. Bolsonaro has been hospitalized ever since, even after taking office in early 2019, and has had to undergo multiple surgeries.

Followers stormed the center of power
Radical Bolsonaro supporters stormed the government district in Brazil’s capital Brasilia on Sunday. They briefly seized control of the country’s major government departments and made their way into Congress, the Supreme Court and the seat of government, Palácio do Planalto. There they rebelled, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. It took security forces hours to regain control of the situation.

About 1,500 radical Bolsonaro supporters were provisionally arrested after the riots. Security forces cleared a camp of Bolsonaro sympathizers in front of the armed forces headquarters in the capital on Monday and temporarily detained the activists, the justice ministry said. Camps of Bolsonaro supporters were also broken up in other cities such as Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo and arrests were made there as well.

Call for extradition of Bolsonaro
Demands for Bolsonaro’s extradition have become louder from the ranks of US Democrats as a result of the storming. However, so far the United States has not received an extradition request against the former head of state. “We have not yet received an official request from the Brazilian government regarding Bolsonaro,” National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Monday during a visit by US President Joe Biden to Mexico City. “If such a request is made, we will take it seriously.”
