In India, 20 primary school students needed medical attention after lunch: not only lentils and rice ended up on their plates, but also a dead snake.
Shortly after eating, about 20 children vomited and had to be taken to hospital. The container of lentils also turned out to be a reptile, authorities in Birbhum district, West Bengal state, confirmed on Tuesday.
One of the children is still being treated, but his condition is not life-threatening. All other victims have already been released, it said. A sample of the lenses has been sent to a lab.
combat malnutrition
In India, government schools serve one free meal a day to address the malnutrition of many children and encourage them to attend school. Most recently, there was a tragic incident in a school kitchen in 2013 when toxic insect repellent got into the food and 23 primary school students died.
