Steyr and Enns also recently started to exist on our neighboring planet Mars. The mayor of Steyr, Markus Vogl (SPÖ), reports this via a press release on Wednesday. Accordingly, two craters on the red planet have been named after the Upper Austrian cities by the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
The International Astronomical Union (IAU), the internationally recognized authority for assigning names to celestial objects and their surface features, names small Martian impact craters up to 50 kilometers in diameter after cities with up to 100,000 inhabitants.
Naming developed by SETI researchers
According to Vogl, the naming was coined by American planetary researcher Janice L. Bishop, who works for the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) project and has family in Steyr.
The alien “Steyr” is about 20 kilometers in diameter and is located in the southern hemisphere of Mars just below the equator in a region called Tyrrhena Terra. The slightly larger crater “Enns” with a diameter of 23 kilometers is right next to it.
The western crater was named “Enns” because it is older than the “Steyr” crater, and the town of Enns appears to be older than the town of Steyr in terms of settlement and municipal law, according to the SETI website.
In addition to the two Upper Austrian cities, craters on the Red Planet are also named after the Tyrolean capital of Innsbruck, Kufstein and Vils near Reutte.
