The Supreme Court of the Basque Country has provisionally suspended the abolition of VUT premiums for 34 civil servants of the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council.

The formal institution said this Wednesday in a statement of this court resolution that, according to what it specifies, “does not address the substance of the case” and affects “only and exclusively these 34 people”.

This group of Gipuzkoa Provincial Council officials has appealed to the court asking for precautionary measures following the decision to withdraw the above-mentioned bonuses.

The Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa announced this last month July the abolition of these payments in application of various Supreme Court judgments.

The Provincial Council, which is following in the footsteps of other institutions such as the City Hall of Bilbao who acted in the same way, today she was “very surprised by the decision of the Supreme Court of the Basque Country, which she “respects and complies with”.

With regard to the bounty in question, the Provincial Council recalled that “those officials of the Provincial Council who met the requirements of the social security system to access voluntary early retirement were entitled to a bounty.”

This corresponded to a number of monthly payments determined based on the number of quarters remaining before reaching the statutory retirement age maximum of 40,000 euros.
