As a neutral country, Austria does not supply arms to war-torn Ukraine. Yet images have now surfaced of Austrian war material destroyed by the Russian army.
A short video was posted on the Twitter account of the Ukraine Weapons Tracker on Wednesday, purporting to show a destroyed M-109 A5Ö howitzer. The wreck is said to be located in Berestowe, near the currently heavily disputed town of Bakhmut.
The vehicle, which weighs 28 tons, fires ammunition with a caliber of 155 millimeters and has a range of up to 30 kilometers. According to the military, the M-109 A5Ö self-propelled howitzer has an electronic fire control system and a self-propelled gun with state-of-the-art targeting and observation equipment. The maximum speed of the gun vehicle is around 60 km/h.
Latvia bought from Austria and donated to Ukraine
But how did this self-propelled howitzer get to Ukraine? It is one of 35 sold to Latvia in 2017. Under then Defense Minister Norbert Darabos (SPÖ), the army’s heavy artillery was reduced. Last year, the Baltic country sent six howitzers from this tranche to the war country. Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Resnikov later thanked him on his Twitter page, stating that the howitzers are “already showing success”.
Zelenskyy: “The front in the Donetsk region is holding out”
The site of the destroyed self-propelled howitzer is located in an area of eastern Ukraine that is currently experiencing heavy fighting. While Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov spoke to the Interfax news agency about “positive dynamics in progress,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in his daily video address on Wednesday evening: “The front in the Donetsk region is holding firm.” defense. Now the terrorist state and its propagandists are trying to pretend that part of our city of Soledar – a city almost completely destroyed by the invaders – is some kind of Russian property,” Zelensky said. With these claims of supposed success, Russia was trying to mislead its people and “support the mobilization”. In addition, the “advocates of aggression” should have more hope.
While the Kremlin is still cautious, the head of Russia’s Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, claims the town has been completely captured, which the Ukrainian side denies.
