Terrible tragedy in Hohenberg in Lower Austria: a pensioner suddenly went up in flames in his apartment. The man died.
A death claimed a fire in Hohenberg in the Lilienfeld district. Around 06:30 a fire broke out in an apartment on the first floor of a house. When the alarm was sounded, the room was already fully ablaze. The 76-year-old resident was trapped in the bedroom behind by the flames. The fire was well advanced when firefighters arrived, they said.
50 comrades in action
“There was an enormous heat development and dense clouds of smoke reaching to the ground,” explains operations manager Siegfried Warta of the Hohenberg fire brigade to the “Krone”. The 76-year-old was said to have been rescued alive from the house, but died a short time later at the scene of the accident – presumably as a result of smoke inhalation.
Four respiratory protection teams and more than 50 comrades were on the scene. Possible cause of fire may be the heating. The police investigation is still ongoing.
