Texting scam – strangers rob pensioners of their money

Date:

It is a perfidious trick that often leads to success with the mostly older victims. Scammers pose as the recipient’s daughter or son via text message and demand money – usually under the guise of an emergency.

In Salzburg, three such cases have recently become known that show how the perpetrators act.

Fall 1: In the afternoon of January 11, a 63-year-old woman from Flachgau received a message from an unknown number. The sender posed as her alleged daughter, claiming that her cell phone was broken. Because the alleged daughter claimed to have to transfer money urgently, the victim passed on his bank details for electronic payments. Damage: about 10,000 euros.

Fall 2: An 81-year-old from Salzburg was asked for a transfer through the same arrangement by an unknown number. When the retiree was about to make the switch, the real daughter came home and was able to dissuade him from making the switch.

Fall 3: A 77-year-old woman from Salzburg receives a typical text message. Because she cannot reach her son by telephone, she transfers 840 euros to a stranger. Only then did she realize the scam.
