In Upper Austria, bird flu was detected on Friday at a private poultry farm in the district of Braunau near the border with the state of Salzburg. The affected farm keeps three geese, eleven ducks and 20 chickens, as well as peacocks, donkeys, ponies and sheep. Part of the poultry population has already died.
The district administration ordered the killing of the remaining poultry, the country announced in a broadcast. A protection and surveillance zone is set up around the affected farm for at least three weeks to prevent possible transmission. Within the protection zone with a radius of three kilometers, all poultry farms are also checked by the official veterinarian.
Mandatory stable since January 10
Due to the recent outbreak of bird flu in Europe, parking facilities have been mandatory since Tuesday 10 January in areas with a high risk. The avian flu “poses no danger to humans and is not transmitted through food,” said state veterinary director Thomas Hain.
