The Trento public prosecutor’s office has announced that it wants to stop the investigation into the glacier fracture on the Marmolada. According to the report, the July 3, 2022 accident was unforeseeable, prosecutors said. The examining magistrate has the last word.
The purpose of the investigation was to find out whether certain people could have foreseen the accident. In detail, unknown individuals were investigated for suspicion of causing a catastrophe through negligence. An expert opinion now casts doubt on that. The accident was unforeseeable, the fall of 6480 cubic meters of ice was caused by several factors, including a combination of high temperatures and the structural properties of the glacier itself.
Review
As a reminder, on July 3, 11 people died when a glacier broke on the Marmolada between the northern Italian regions of Trentino and Veneto. They included six men and three women from Italy and two mountaineers from the Czech Republic. Eight other people were injured, some seriously. As reported, a large ice shelf had collapsed and hit the climbing routes to the top.
Warmer than usual
Experts attributed the collapse of the ice age to the effects of climate change. The area was previously significantly warmer than normal. So Meltwater could have preferred the departure. Nevertheless, the public prosecutor of Trento started proceedings against unknown persons. It will only be finalized if a supervisory judge agrees.
