The doctors in Vienna are at the limit, the health emergency has not improved even after a dramatic emergency room hazard report. A patient with pneumonia had to wait for hours in an intensive care bed. Not the only concern: the number of documented calls for help from city hospitals has doubled.
Only at the end of December did the “Krone” receive an explosive warning from the Ottakringkliniek, the former Wilhelminenspital. The dramatic appeals for help to the Vienna Health Association touched the heart of a hospital with the central emergency department for the first time.
Nothing has happened since then. On the contrary: while the general management is looking for the mole, another three nurses want to leave the department. In addition, about a third of all internal medicine beds are still closed, largely due to lack of staff. At the end of the year there were 928 or almost 18 percent of the “systematized” beds in all of Vienna!
Patient congestion is increasing
The “patient backlog” has also not improved. Extreme example: Last week a patient with pneumonia had to wait eight hours for a place in the intensive care unit of another hospital because there were no beds available!
75 documented calls for help from doctors
In any case, the increase in danger reports from city hospitals in the past year is alarming. According to this, there were 75 documented calls for help from doctors – more than double compared to 2021 (30).
Fewer ‘healthy’ years of life
In line with the health crisis in the country, the Court of Auditors published a report on Friday stating “urgent need for action”. According to this, the remaining “healthy life years” at age 65 have decreased by an average of 1.6 years compared to 2014, even before Corona 2019.
