Three witnesses followed the man who attacked a woman from Vienna (67) on Friday and stole her handbag. In an interview with the “Krone”, one of the courageous interveners tells how the attack and his pursuit went.
The 30-year-old, who wishes to remain anonymous, was on his way home on a bicycle. “Hold the man,” he suddenly heard someone shout. Then he saw the two young boys (15 and 16 years old) who started chasing the robber. “It was clear to me then, I’m not kidding, the bag was stolen,” he says, pedaling on his bike. “Stop, stop!” he shouted to the criminal, who even dropped his bag in the city park. As reported, the younger helpers took the bag and returned it to the victim.
Rover thought pursuer was lost
Meanwhile, he cycled after the perpetrator. When he ran down an embankment, he had to get off his bike. This gave him a slight advantage. “But that was fine with me. Because I have no experience with hand-to-hand combat and wanted to avoid a direct confrontation.” A wise decision! The robber hid in a house entrance for a while.Believing that he had left his pursuer behind, he ventured outside and continued on his way to Dietrichsteinplatz.
“Community involvement is important”
But he was wrong! The 30-year-old remained unobtrusively on his heels and kept the police informed of his location and gave an extensive description of the person. Shortly after Dietrichsteinplatz, the perpetrator came to an end: “A police patrol came, I pointed to the man, who then arrested him.”
The courageous cyclist always remains modest in the ‘Krone’ conversation and does not want to be celebrated as a hero: ‘I also participate in the climate movement. And no, I’m not one to glue myself to the ground. However, in my ideal world, it is obvious to stand up for others when they are suffering. It is important to stand up for our society.”
