As predicted by the weather experts, winter returned to the country on Monday. Heavy snowfall initially blocked roads and power outages in southern Austria.
In Carinthia, the state alarm and warning center (LAWZ) registered hundreds of operations on Monday morning. Trees that fell under the weight of the snow paralyzed roads, many also got stuck in the snowy lanes, leading to traffic jams in the early morning.
Several thousand households from the Gelände valley to the Völkermarkt were cut off from the power supply due to snowfall. Due to an accident between two cars and a truck, the southern motorway between Feistritz and Villach-West in the direction of Salzburg has been closed.
Snow road in Styria
The situation in Styria is similar: snow-covered roads caused delays on the A2 and the Pyhrnautobahn (A9) between the Graz-West interchange and the Spielfeld state border was also affected. Due to the wintry road conditions, there were traffic accidents, reports the ARBÖ.
According to the Central Institute of Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG), snowfall would continue into the morning hours in some areas.
