A shocking car accident with one death was reported from Berlin on Monday evening: a car drove into a pillar of the Brandenburg Gate, the most famous landmark in the German capital. Firefighters found a dead man in the heavily damaged vehicle. Other people most likely wouldn’t have been in the car because you’re “pretty sure,” a police spokesman said early Monday morning.
“According to initial findings, no other people were injured,” police later said on Twitter. During the night, investigators secured traces at the scene of the incident on Pariser Platz in the Mitte district.
Black marks and chips visible on pillars
The car – a dark vehicle with a sedan – crashed into the Brandenburger Tor, coming from the central boulevard Unter den Linden, around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday evening. The heavily damaged vehicle came to a stop, wedged between two pillars of the gate. Black marks and small chips were visible on the massive pillars.
It was initially unclear how fast the vehicle was traveling, as well as the driver’s identity and background to the incident. According to the fire service, 30 emergency services were on the scene. A screen has been placed around the car wreck.
