Focus on the cost – most Austrians live quite happily

Date:

An overwhelming majority of 81 percent are satisfied with their current living situation – 49 percent very much. Housing and heating costs are the main factors for those who are dissatisfied. Saving energy is becoming increasingly important – not only for tenants, but also for owners. The former are generally less satisfied than homeowners.

According to Statistics Austria, 49 percent live in their own house or apartment in Austria – in Vienna it’s only 19 percent, as there is a large subsidized or non-profit rental market in the federal capital.

According to 67 percent of those surveyed*, a move should significantly reduce energy costs in particular. Sustainability in the field of energy and heating would be important for 66 percent, and the sustainability of the entire building for 60 percent. 53 percent believe that moving should reduce housing costs. In Vienna, 75 percent expect heating and housing costs to improve when they move.

The subject of energy conservation has reached homeowners
Ten percent of surveyed homeowners across Austria currently own a heat pump, but 39 percent aspire to one. 31 percent use district heating and 37 percent are considering a switch. 21 percent want to carry out a thermal renovation, 24 percent want to change the heating system. The owners want to heat “greener”. Pellets or wood use relatively stable about one-fifth.

Two-thirds prefer ownership
They mainly see the following advantages: 76 percent prefer to pay a loan in installments rather than rent, 80 percent see a home as capital accumulation, for example in case of unemployment, and 91 percent see the purchase as a stable investment for the future. However, 78 percent of homeowners believe that only the higher income earners can afford it. But it is not likely to become cheaper in the future – despite the recent calming in property prices.

* For the study, the market research institute Integral surveyed 1,823 people in online interviews between March 1 and March 13, 2023 on behalf of Erste Bank.
