Italian police have arrested the head of the Sicilian Cosa Nostra, Matteo Messina Denaro. The mafia boss and Italy’s most wanted criminal was arrested in a private clinic in Palermo, where he was treated.
The mafioso has been wanted for 30 years and is accused of at least 50 murders. The 60-year-old allegedly committed the first at age 18.
Messina Denaro is considered the most powerful man in the Sicilian mafia, although it is unclear whether he controls the entire Cosa Nostra. He is also considered to be the successor to mafia godfather Salvatore “Toto” Riina, who died in 2017 at the age of 87 in a high-security prison. The last known photographs of him date from the early 1990s.
