Accused of multiple attacks and fifty murders, including several children, the last big boss of Cosa Nostra has been arrested during a medical checkup at a Palermo clinic
Italy’s historic bloodthirsty mafia suffered its worst blow this morning following the arrest of Matteo Messina Denaro, the most wanted capo by transalpine authorities for thirty years. The 60-year-old mafia boss was admitted to the day hospital of a private Palermo clinic and was captured having breakfast at a nearby bar, presumably before undergoing routine cancer treatment. Other versions suggest that the arrest has already taken place at the clinic. He did not resist the carabinieri. He simply turned himself in and has now been transferred to a detention center that has not been disclosed by the police.
Initial information suggests that security forces had detected the capo as a patient at the center, where he underwent periodic checks. This Sunday evening, several dozen officers were gathered around the clinic, even infiltrating inside in case Messina tried to escape or resisted.
Messina Denaro is considered the last great boss of the Cosa Nostra. He had thus fulfilled his dream of becoming the ‘number one’ of the Italian mafia since he started committing his first crimes decades ago. His track record paints him as a sassy individual. He is accused of fifty murders, as well as carrying out the worst attacks that took place in the country during the ultra-violent 1980s and 1990s, when the mafia unleashed a veritable wave of terror that claimed the lives of judges Falcone and Borsellino, among others. Messina’s list of victims is very long and includes children and partners of his rivals, whether they were children or pregnant women.
Already harassed by police allegations, the capo disappeared while on vacation in Tuscany in 1993. Since then, he has remained hidden from justice and security forces, who have since pursued him until his arrest became an obsession. In these three decades, the boss has managed to cover all his tracks, to the point that he never met his daughter. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called her arrest “a great victory for the state”.
