A London police officer has pleaded guilty to multiple rapes and other crimes in court. At London’s Southwark Crown Court on Monday, the 48-year-old admitted to depriving and raping a woman of her liberty 20 years ago. In December, the suspect had already admitted in court that he had raped and abused 11 other women.
These acts are believed to have been committed between 2004 and 2020. Before joining the police force, the man had served in the military. It was not until the autumn of 2021 that he was relieved of his position after complaints.
49 violations
Chief Inspector Ian Moor said the high number of offenses – 49 in total – showed the man’s “insensitivity”. He approached women through online dating apps like Tinder, as well as at social events, using his position as a police officer to gain trust.
Women forced to clean naked
“He spent time developing relationships with women to satisfy his need for degradation and control,” Moor said. The perpetrator oppressed his victims in “the most destructive way”. He forced some to clean his house naked or locked them under a staircase at home for hours. “I’ve seen kennels that are bigger,” the researcher described.
London police are plagued by scandal
For the scandal-plagued London police, the case in which the verdict will be announced in early February is another blow. After some major cases, such as the murder of London’s Sarah Everard by an active police officer, law enforcement in the British capital has lost much of the public’s trust. Independent reports also gave Scotland Yard damning testimony about sexism and racism within its own ranks. The new police chief, Mark Rowley, aims to restore confidence and reform the police force.
