The extraction work for natural gas extraction in Molln in Upper Austria could damage valuable wetlands in the Kalkalpen National Park. However, it is still unclear whether an environmental impact assessment is possible at all.
Who is responsible for this sale of Austrian natural and gas resources to an Australian company? Who are the beneficiaries? Who brokered the deal? State Councilor Michael Lindner tabled these questions Monday at the state government’s meeting. “I would like to answer that,” said the SPÖ leader.
Drilling in federal forest lands
The only thing that seems clear so far is that the drilling planned by the Australian company ADX Ltd in the Jaidhaus Valley near Molln should take place on areas of the Austrian Federal Forests (ÖBf). And it is also certain that the nature conservation officer and politically responsible for the national parks Manfred Haimbuchner (FPÖ) has no objection to the project on the grounds of the national park.
The local politicians feel brutally persuaded and, like the locals, fear for the natural gem of the Jaidhaus Valley. The ADX Group’s gas production plans could also have a huge impact on the Kalkalpen National Park.
