Next NATO Hurdle – Hanged Erdogan Doll: No Investigation

Date:

Sweden’s path to NATO, which Turkey has been blocking for months, has taken another hurdle. The government in Ankara has reportedly reacted angrily to a protest near Stockholm City Hall in which a doll modeled after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was hung at his feet. However, the Swedish public prosecutor sees no reason to investigate the cause.

On Monday, Stockholm prosecutor Lucas Eriksson said he had decided not to open a preliminary investigation. He had previously told Aftonbladet newspaper that he did not think the action could amount to libel. However, a review may be requested.

Activists compared Erdogan to Mussolini
Behind the action are apparently activists from a Swedish organization that describes itself as “a network for solidarity and exchange with the revolutionary movement throughout Kurdistan”. They wanted to bring Erdogan close to the fascist Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, whose body was hanged upside down in Milan in 1945. The Turkish government reacted angrily, summoning the Swedish ambassador and canceling a visit by the Swedish speaker to Ankara.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also condemned the move. On the subject of NATO membership, he said at a press conference with EU Council President Charles Michel in Stockholm on Monday that he remained strongly convinced that Sweden would become a NATO member “sooner or later”. He does not want to speculate about the exact time. But things can drag on.
