Just one day after the resignation of former defense minister Christine Lambrecht, the German government has agreed on a successor. The former interior minister of Lower Saxony must ensure peace in the collapse-ravaged ministry.
Lambrecht announced her resignation as defense minister in a written statement Monday morning after a series of mishaps and only 13 months in office. According to information from the dpa, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has been able to determine her successor in time.
No more gender equality in government
With the appointment of Pistorius, there are no longer an equal number of women as men in the cabinet – meaning that the chancellor can no longer keep his promise of gender equality. Until now eight men and eight women have held ministerial posts, now, without further changes, the ratio would shift to nine men and seven women.
In the traffic light coalition, even before the new appointment was announced, there were votes in the chancellor party SPD that this parity should be maintained.
The 62-year-old lawyer Pistorius has been Minister of the Interior of Lower Saxony since 2013. Since 2017 he is a member of the state parliament in Hanover. From 2006 to 2013 he was mayor of Osnabrück. According to government circles, Chancellor Scholz will also officially announce the new staff on Tuesday afternoon during an appointment with Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens).
