The first major attack of the year: none of the 56 Moroccans and four Syrians – discovered in the Burgenland district of Oberpullendorf – could show a passport.
The influx of refugees is currently limited. While up to 3,700 migrants were stranded in Burgenland each week last summer, their number has been reduced to 400 to 900 within seven days during the cold season.
Oral request
A major exception was the march of 60 migrants at the boundary stone B56 near Nikitsch. In unusually warm temperatures in January, 56 Moroccans and four Syrians made their way from Hungary to Austria – presumably under the wing of human traffickers. Soldiers spotted the group in the early afternoon. None of the young men had any ID. “Everyone immediately submitted an oral application for asylum,” it says.
117 migrants in the previous year
The largest seizure in 2022 was reported just two months ago from Nickelsdorf. As reported, a convoy of 117 refugees had moved from Hungary to Austria. Packed together, the 113 Moroccans, two Tunisians and two Cameroonians were taken to the border in a truck. In Hegyeshalom, just a kilometer from Burgenland, all migrants were put on the street.
smuggler arrested
The handcuffs now clicked for a wanted smuggler. As reported, on January 13, he had driven a large Syrian family with three small children to Austria in a Kia Sorento when he was on the run from arrest in Neckenmarkt. Police success: the Romanian was caught at the Deutschkreutz train station.
