Protests in Lützerath – this is how the chief negotiator got activists out of the tunnel

Date:

Billion-dollar business against climate activists: In the German town of Lützerath (NRW), climate activists fiercely opposed coal mining for weeks. The protests ended with a police evacuation – but two activists had dug tunnels under the village and risked their lives there. The chief negotiator now describes how he managed to convince the recalcitrant underground activists to leave their tunnel.

He usually doesn’t talk about his negotiations. “We work in the background and the public usually doesn’t know about our support,” says Matthias Schranner. The German used to be the chief negotiator for the police and the FBI – and now offers his services with his Schranner AG as a consultant to companies and authorities. Schranner became active for the energy company RWE in Lützerath. He and his team conducted the crucial negotiations that led to the evacuation of the tunnels. In a rare insight into his work, Schranner explains how he succeeded.
