The population in Germany has reached an all-time high: by the end of 2022, the number had risen to a whopping 84.3 million. That’s an increase of 1.1 million people within a year – and the main reason for that is the immigration of war refugees from Ukraine.
According to current estimates, 1.42 to 1.45 million more people came to Germany than went abroad. “For example, net immigration in 2022 was more than four times higher than in the previous year (2021: 329,163) and higher than at any time since the beginning of the time series in 1950,” the Federal Statistical Office announced on Thursday in an initial estimate. In addition to the strong immigration of war refugees from Ukraine, the immigration of people of other nationalities has also increased sharply.
Growth only through immigration
In the three decades since German reunification, the German population had largely grown. The only exceptions were 1998 and 2003 to 2010. However, the population growth was only due to more people immigrating than emigrating. Without net immigration, the population would have shrunk since 1972, as more people have died than have been born each year since then.
A decrease in the number of births and an increase in the number of deaths have had a dampening effect on population growth in 2022. According to the reports available so far from the civil registry, the number of births has fallen by about seven percent compared to 2021 and is it probably between 735,000 and 745,000 (2021: 795,492). The number of deaths, on the other hand, rose by about four percent to about 1.06 (2021: 1.02) million.
