Anti-Semitic attack on Vienna’s central cemetery: On Wednesday evening, a fire broke out in a ceremonial hall in the Jewish part of the cemetery. The outside walls were defaced with swastikas. The police are investigating.
The professional fire brigade was alerted around 8 a.m. On site it turned out that the fire had already broken out in the adjacent room on Wednesday evening. When the emergency services arrived, the fire had already largely been extinguished.
The building was temporarily closed by the authorities, according to a statement from the Israelite Community (IGK). There is significant property damage. Graves could be visited.
Swastikas were also spray-painted on the outside walls of the building. The LPD Vienna and the LKA Vienna have taken over the investigation.
Chancellor Karl Nehammer speaks of an attack. “Anti-Semitism has no place in our society and will be combated with all political and legal means. I hope that the perpetrators are identified quickly,” Nehammer said on X.
