At least 15 soldiers have been killed in a fire at a barracks in eastern Armenia. Three others were seriously injured.
According to them, the fire broke out in the village of Azat in the eastern Gegharkunik region. The cause of the fire was unclear for now. The small country in the Caucasus with about three million inhabitants has not yet recovered from the war that was fought in 2020 with neighboring country Azerbaijan.
The armed conflict ended in a heavy defeat for Armenia and caused a serious political crisis in the country. Despite the end of the fighting, tensions between the two countries over their borders remain. Last August, more than a dozen people were killed in an explosion at a wholesale market in the Armenian capital Yerevan.
